Champagne Jacques Selosse

The Champagne house Jacques Selosse is located in Avize, Champagne. This highly esteemed house is renowned for its Substance cuvée and its use of a solera system that dates back to 1986—a technique originating in the production of sherry.
The house was founded in the 1950s by Jacques Selosse, who at that time sold a large portion of his grapes to Champagne Lanson. However, the house gained the most fame under his son, Anselme Selosse, who took over operations in 1980. Anselme improved the quality by reducing yields and began to carefully rethink the estate's approach to their terroir—especially focusing on the Grand Cru villages of Avize, Cramant, and Oger.
Today, he is known for being one of the first to elevate the concept of terroir to new heights in Champagne.
Over the last 20 years, the Selosse family has developed their own cultivation system, which is not about following a fixed method but rather adapting to the varying conditions of the vineyards throughout the growing season.
Since 2011, Anselme’s son, Guillaume, has been working alongside his father. They often refer to "the gatherer" when explaining their work with the vines. "Gatherers" venture into nature to harvest and collect the fruits that are available: "Primum non nocere - first, do no harm... the Hippocratic oath... it is humans who disturb nature the most, so one must refrain from intervening as often as possible."
Guillaume has long been preparing to follow in his father’s footsteps. Throughout the time they’ve worked together side by side, he has developed his own skills and inclinations, which will give the wines a unique identity in the future. The transition and transmission are in motion—as is the understanding and concept of Champagne.
For the house's flagship Champagne Grand Cru "Substance cuvée" BdB Brut, all grapes are harvested in Avize. The house’s Champagne Grand Cru "Initial" BdB Brut and Champagne Grand Cru "Version Originale" BdB Extra Brut are made from Chardonnay from three vintages, harvested in Avize, Cramant, and Oger.
