Domaine Henri Gouges

Domaine Henri Gouges is a very well-respected winemaker located in the heart of Côte d'Or in the Burgundy village of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Specializing in crafting predominantly long-lived red wines from the prominent Pinot Noir grape, which is characteristic of the region, the domaine does not possess any land in grand cru locations but are known for their vineyard holdings in several premier cru sites.
Their premier cru vineyards, along with those throughout the broader Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, are recognized for producing some of the finest wines in the Côte de Nuits. Among these, Les Saint-Georges stands out as the most renowned.
An early trailblazer, Gouges departed from the often perceived as corrupt Burgundy négociant system in the 1920s. Instead, he advocated for estate bottling, a practice uncommon during that era. During the 1930s, a pivotal period for the designation of Burgundy appellations, Gouges, serving both as the village mayor and a member of the INAO (France's national appellations body), successfully opposed the classification of any Nuits-Saint-Georges vineyards as grand crus.
Presently, Domaine Henri Gouges oversees vineyard holdings spanning 14.5 hectares (36 acres), encompassing parcels in seven premier cru-designated sites. While the majority of wines produced are Pinot Noir, a limited quantity of white wines is also crafted.
Under the broad Bourgogne Blanc appellation, a Pinot Blanc is produced. Additionally, the premier cru Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges stands out as a unique site where both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are permitted. This enclave monopole within the larger Les Porrets-Saint-George Premier Cru vineyard reflects the domain's diversity.
Another noteworthy offering is the white wine from the Les Perrières vineyard, where Gouges creates a unique expression from mutated Pinot Noir. This "white" Pinot Noir can bear various designations, ranging from Pinot Blanc and Pinot Musigny to Pinot Gouges.
Pinot Gouges, a lasting legacy of Henri Gouges, represents a cloned type of this mutation discovered and propagated by the visionary winemaker himself.
