Cos d'Estournel

Château Cos d'Estournel (2nd Growth) is located in the southern part of Saint Estèphe and stands as one of the region's proud landmarks. Situated between Pauillac and Saint Estèphe is the Cos Gironde hillside, which dominates the landscape. "Cos" translates to "gravelly hill" in Gascon, forming the basis of the first part of the estate's name.
The second part comes from the former owner, Louis Gaspard d'Estournel (1762-1853), who is also the mastermind behind the distinctive architecture. After inheriting some vineyards near the village of Cos, he became aware of the exceptional quality the grapes yielded.
Upon his return from the East, he took over the property in 1811 and decided to erect exotic, oriental pagodas over the cellars. He became known as the Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe.
Unfortunately, in 1852, he had to give up his dream as he had accrued significant debt embellishing his beloved property. He ended up having to sell to London banker Martyns. However, Martyns allowed Louis to stay on the estate, where he passed away in 1853, two years before the imperial classification of the estate in 1855.
Since the year 2000, Château Cos d'Estournel has been owned by Michel Reybier. His goal has been to maintain the estate's high standards and continuous pursuit of expertise while continuing the avant-garde style initiated by Louis Gaspard d'Estournel.
Wine is produced on 91 hectares out of the 100 hectares of land owned by the estate. This results in an annual yield of approximately 215,000 bottles of their Grand Vin, the 1st wine Château Cos d'Estournel 2nd Growth, and about 165,000 bottles of the 2nd wine (Les) Pagodes de Cos. Additionally, there is a small production of approximately 3,000 bottles of the white wine Cos d'Estournel Blanc, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The estate also produces the wine Goulée by Cos d’Estournel, which carries the Médoc appellation.
