The white Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Sur la Roche from Domaine Merlin is among the top 10 most highly rated Pouilly-Fuissé Sur la Roche wines (based on critic scores).
From 2020 the plot, Sur la Roche, is classified as a 1er Cru.
Next to the old vines a new planting was carried out in 2021.
On the nose, it is a very generous wine with notes of citrus peel, and a touch of chamomile.
The palate is built on aromatic purity, very well balanced with a fine line of acidity. Its crystalline side reveals this great terroir, pulls the wine in length and heralds a great guard.
The plot that gives the cuvée Pouilly-Fuissé 1 er Cru Sur la Roche is located on the rock (french: sur la roche) of Vergisson. Belonging to the commune of Vergisson, it is rented in early 2019 by Théo and Paul Merlin.
Overlooking the Saône Valley, these 70-year-old Chardonnay vines are rooted in Quaternary clay-limestone soil. The slope is about 15% and the vines are exposed to the southeast. Vergisson is the most northerly commune of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. At an altitude of about 380 metres, this vine gives later ripening.
The Chardonnay grapes are vinified in the Merlin winery in La Roche-Vineuse.
