Château Coutet

Château Coutet (1st Growth) is situated in the Barsac region of Sauternes. Its name originates from the Gascon dialect word for "knife," evoking the fresh, lively, and sharp fsensation that meets the palate when the wine is consumed. Château Coutet is one of the greatest estates, and according to Robert Parker, the only one that can be compared to Château d'Yquem.
The castle has a rich history and was a fortress in the 13th century. In 1643, it was recognized as a Sauternes estate and later came under the same ownership as Chateau d’Yquem. The modern era began when Chateau Coutet was purchased by the Baly family in 1977.
The 39 hectares yield approximately 3,500 cases annually of the 1st wine Château Coutet 1st Growth, the 2nd wine La Chartreuse de Coutet, the exceptional Cuvée Madame edition (in honor of Madame Rolland-Guy, who owned the estate until 1977), and the white wine Opalie de Château Coutet.
Château Coutet can be enjoyed young and without decanting. In fact, it's an experience to drink the wine immediately after release, where the juicy wine practically leaps out of the glass. However, like all great wines, Château Coutet improves significantly with age and does not reach full maturity until it is between 12-35 years old, and in the best vintages, perhaps even later!
