Château Rieussec

Château Rieussec (1st Growth) produces one of the kings of sweet wines, in fact, some of the very best wines in Sauternes. The estate is owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, who also own the Pauillac estates Château Lafite Rothschild (1st Growth) and Château Duhart-Milon (4th Growth), as well as Château L’Evangile in Pomerol.
Since Rothschild acquired the estate in 1984, the quality of the wines has been steadily increasing. The 93 hectares are planted with 90% Sémillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc, and 3% Muscadelle, yielding around 6,000 cases annually of the 1st wine Château Rieussec 1st Growth. However, the production and harvest of Sauternes wines are so complicated that the yield is significantly lower in certain years - and in 1993, not a single bottle was produced!
The estate also produces the 2nd wine Carmes de Rieussec, as well as Château de Cosse and the white wine "R" de Rieussec.
"The wines of Sauternes are so wonderful that we wanted to have our own, and Rieussec’s vineyard is outstanding"
- Baron Eric de Rothschild -
